For students passionate about hunting, fishing, and conservation, the idea of turning that passion into a profession can feel like a distant dream. The University of Montevallo’s Outdoor Scholars Program, located in Montevallo, Alabama, is proving that a career in the outdoors isn’t just possible—it’s thriving.
Launched in 2015 under the leadership of University President Dr. John Stewart, the program began with just eight students. Today, it boasts well over 120, drawing young men and women from more than 20 states. What makes it so unique? It combines academics with hands-on experience in hunting, fishing, wildlife management, and outdoor industry career development.
Building the Next Generation of Outdoor Leaders
The Outdoor Scholars Program isn’t simply about time spent in the woods or on the water. It’s designed to prepare students for long-term success in fields like:
- Wildlife and fisheries biology
- Forestry and land management
- Game and fish law enforcement
- Outdoor media, marketing, and communications
- Guiding, outfitting, and professional fishing
Assistant Director Steve Long, a seasoned hunting guide and former Quality Deer Management Association director, works alongside program founder William Crawford to mentor students. Their role goes beyond academics—they serve as coaches, mentors, and, as Long jokes, sometimes drill sergeants.
“Every young person who comes through the program has a passion for the outdoors,” Long explains. “Our job is to channel that passion into real-world skills, opportunities, and careers.”

A Dynasty in Collegiate Bass Fishing
While many universities treat fishing as a club activity, Montevallo treats it like a varsity sport. The results are staggering: the bass fishing team has claimed five consecutive national championships, dominating the collegiate ranks much like Alabama football dominates the SEC.
Students travel across the country competing in major tournaments, with all expenses—fuel, lodging, meals—covered. That’s a rarity in collegiate fishing and one reason Montevallo continues to attract top talent.
Notable alumni include:
- Easton Fothergill – A Bassmaster Classic champion from Minnesota
- Beau Browning – Rising star on the professional circuit
Jack Barron – Montevallo graduate who parlayed his marketing degree and fishing passion into a career as Director of Marketing at Anglers Resource

Beyond the Classroom
The career in the outdoors that Montevallo envisions for its students isn’t limited to fishing trophies. Every student in the Outdoor Scholars Program has the opportunity to participate in unforgettable hunting and fishing trips before graduation.
From tarpon fishing in Florida to turkey hunts in South Dakota, these experiences double as hands-on education and lifelong memories. Students also play a role in filming and producing Outdoor Scholars TV, now transitioning to a YouTube-based format to expand its reach.
Long emphasizes that the goal of these trips isn’t just the harvest. “We want every student to have an experience they’ll never forget,” he says. “Whether that’s their first deer hunt or a saltwater fishing trip of a lifetime.”

Career Connections and Industry Partnerships
The University of Montevallo has developed strong ties with leading outdoor brands, including Realtree, Mossy Oak, Pradco, and Moultrie. These partnerships open doors for internships, job placements, and scholarships.
Students graduate not only with a degree but also with direct industry connections. As Long puts it: “Outdoor companies need accountants, marketers, videographers, and biologists. Our graduates are ready to step into those roles on day one.”
The results speak for themselves. Alumni are finding careers in every corner of the industry—from guiding hunts and managing timberland to producing outdoor media and working for major brands.

Supporting the Program
The Outdoor Scholars Program is fueled by strong community and industry support. Fundraisers, banquets, raffles, and celebrity-hosted hunts provide critical funding each year. Sponsors not only get visibility through jerseys, boats, and events but also help shape the next generation of outdoor professionals.
As Long puts it: “When you support us, you’re investing in the future of the outdoors. These young people will carry the torch for hunting, fishing, and conservation.”
A Unique Path for Outdoor Careers
At a time when fewer young people are spending time outdoors, the University of Montevallo is bucking the trend by producing graduates who are passionate, skilled, and career-ready.
For students dreaming of beginning a career in the outdoors, the Outdoor Scholars Program offers more than a degree—it offers a lifestyle, a community, and a future.
Whether you’re a parent of a high school student, an outdoor industry professional, or simply someone who cares about the future of hunting and fishing, Montevallo’s Outdoor Scholars Program is worth a closer look.
