History

History

In 1972 Lew Childre & Sons introduced a radically new fishing rod that quickly became known as Lew’s Speed Stick. The rod employed a unique pistol grip design and a brand new ceramic ring guide with a cushion insert from Japanese manufacturer Fuji®. Fuji’s new technology was available strictly on Lew Childre rods and together with the grip and new blank technology, Speed Sticks became the number one selling rod for a growing legion of bass fanatics.

Tragically, in 1977, Lew Childre was killed in a plane crash and by 1988, without the vision and enthusiasm of the founder, Lew Childre & Sons closed it’s doors. Carl Haber, then National Sales Manager of Childre, opened communications with Fuji® to consider offering their components to rod manufacturers across the nation. In 1989 Haber was awarded an exclusive partnership with Fuji® and the company’s high quality, high tech rod components became widely available to rod manufacturers across the nation.
